Focusing exclusively on traditional (Fee-for-Service) Medicare patients, this tool allows users to explore national and local trends in observation practice using publicly available Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data. This National Observation Data Tool is available for ACPA members.
The Static Report
The static report provides a comprehensive snapshot of observation data organized in three views:
- National-level trends to understand the overall landscape
- State-by-state comparisons to highlight geographic variation
- Hospital-level data, organized by state, to enable more targeted benchmarking
This structured view allows for high-level comparisons. For many, this is sufficient, but others may want to ask deeper questions about the data using the interactive dashboard.
The Interactive Dashboard
ACPA members can filter data by state, bed size, presence of residents, and other categories. Rather than passively reviewing tables, this dashboard allows customized analysis by choosing data filters most relevant to your hospital or region.
How can the National Observation Data Tool help you?
Together, the static report and interactive dashboard create a layered toolset physician advisors can use to:
- Identify variation between a single institution and peer hospitals at national and state levels
- Highlight outliers that may signal opportunities for process improvement
- Support internal discussions with filtered data tailored to local context
